What Does This Change Mean?

As we take this next step together, it’s natural to have questions about what this change means. At its core, this transition represents a structural alignment, not a reflection of your performance or the value you bring to this organization.

Your role as a professional in the field remains essential to the work we do. This change simply aligns how those professional roles operate with the structure used across the Veritext system while continuing to support the important work you perform every day.

Over the past several weeks, we have reviewed how work is performed across the organization through data analysis, a census of roles, and conversations with leadership. That process helped clarify two primary paths of work across the team: operational roles and field-based professional roles such as reporting, videography, and interpreting.

Aligning these field-based roles with the Veritext independent contractor model allows us to operate consistently across markets while continuing to invest in technology, training, and opportunities for reporters.

What is most important is that nothing changes today. This simply marks the beginning of the next chapter, and we will move forward together one step at a time with all the training, resources, and support you need along the way.

You will remain a Milestone/Kentuckiana/ Pike employee through May 15, 2026. Your transition to independent contractor status will not occur until that time.

Between now and May 15, your employment status remains the same. This period is intentionally designed to give you time to learn Veritext systems, move through the training process in cohorts, become familiar with the tools and workflows used across the Veritext network, and have the opportunity to explore the independent contractor model in more detail. You will also have access to resources, informational sessions, and one-on-one conversations with our team to help ensure you feel comfortable and prepared.

Our goal is that by the time May arrives, you will feel confident in our systems, supported by the team around you, and fully prepared for the transition.

It’s completely understandable to feel uncertain when hearing news like this. Transitions bring questions, and it’s natural to want time to learn more before feeling comfortable.

The good news is that you have a unique advantage many digital reporters joining the Veritext network have not had. Over the coming weeks, you will remain a full-time employee while participating in training and will receive brand new reporting equipment as part of the onboarding process.

This gives you the opportunity to learn our systems, ask questions, and explore how the program works before integration takes place. You are not being asked to make a final decision today — the goal is simply to take the next step, learn about the program, and gather the information you need to decide what’s right for you.

Yes! A structured training program has been designed specifically for the Milestone/Kentuckiana/Pike team to help you learn the Veritext software, equipment, and workflows used across the Veritext network. Training will take place in cohorts so each group receives focused instruction and support.

Your current trainers — Peneo, Victoria, Tom, and Lily — have already completed this training and will help guide you through the process. Our goal is to make sure everyone has the tools, training, and support needed to feel prepared well before integration takes place.

The 1099 Model Explained

As part of this transition, your working relationship will shift from an employee structure to an independent contractor model — a widely used and well-established structure across the court reporting industry.

Across the Veritext network, hundreds of digital reporters work successfully under this model and appreciate the flexibility, independence, and opportunities it can provide. The information below walks through some of the most common questions about how this model works in practice and what you can expect as you explore this path.

Employee (W-2): An employee works directly for a company. The company typically sets the schedule, assigns work, and handles things like payroll taxes and benefits.

Independent Contractor (1099): An independent contractor works as an independent professional who provides services to a company. Instead of being scheduled like an employee, contractors usually share their availability and accept the assignments they want to take. They also manage their own taxes and personal business matters.

In both cases, the actual reporting work you perform is the same. The difference is simply the structure of the professional relationship and the level of flexibility and independence that comes with it.

One of the biggest advantages of the independent contractor model is the control it gives professionals over their work. Rather than having the office direct your time, you work collaboratively with assigners by sharing your availability and accepting assignments that fit your schedule.

This structure often provides greater flexibility and freedom, along with opportunities to increase your earning potential. Within the Veritext system, reporters participate in a tier structure that rewards strong performance, additional skills, and more complex work.

Ultimately, your success is largely in your hands — and our goal is to provide the training, tools, and support to help you build a successful professional practice within the Veritext network.

Pay structures for independent contractors are different from employee pay structures, and specific rates are determined at the local market level. Your local team will walk through the details with you so you understand exactly how compensation works in your market.

Veritext is currently implementing an updated pay structure for our 1099 digital reporting community. When you transition to independent contractor status in May, you will also be among the first reporters to move to a weekly pay schedule rather than biweekly, providing more frequent payments and a payment structure that better supports independent professionals.

In terms of work, you will continue to have access to the same assignments you perform today. Once fully integrated into the Veritext system, you may also have access to additional opportunities across the broader Veritext network. Veritext works with hundreds of digital reporters under this model, and dedicated teams monitor utilization to help ensure reporters remain active and have consistent opportunities for work.

Under the independent contractor model, you will not report to a single manager in the same way employees typically do. Instead, you will work with several specialized teams who support reporters in different ways, including your local assigners, Digital Reporting Champions, Talent Resources, and Quality Assurance teams. This structure provides a high degree of autonomy, placing greater control in the hands of the reporter.

You will work collaboratively with assigners by sharing your availability and accepting the assignments that fit your schedule. Your time will be focused primarily on the professional work of reporting itself, and many reporters appreciate the flexibility this structure provides. Maintaining clear communication and consistent availability with assigners helps ensure steady access to assignments.
